Why Surface Dressing
-
To provide a waterproof seal to the surface of the carriageway
or footway and, in doing so, prevent the ingress of water and
the subsequent damage to underlying foundations.
-
To increase the skid resistance of the surface course by providing
increased texture depth and micro-texture.
- To provide a decorative appearance to the carriageway or footway
by using naturally coloured aggregates.
The Process
- Hot bitumen emulsion binder is applied, at specific spread
rate, from a bitumen sprayer (calibrated in accordance with BS
1707).
- Chipping are immediately applied and rolled into the bitumen
binder.
- Surplus chippings are left for an interim period to be trafficked
into the surface before being removed at a later date if required.
- Polymer-modified bitumen is increasingly being used in high
stress areas along with rack-in chipping applications, pad
coats and reverse pad coat techniques to provide bespoke
specifications to suite particular locations and performance
requirements.
- All works to be carried out in accordance with the TRL Road
Note 63 (2008 sixth edition).

Footway and Canal Towpath Surface Dressing
We offer a turn-key contract involving the design, construction
and surfacing (bitumen macadam and surface dressing). Using our
purpose built combined footway sprayer, our customers benefit from
the speed of application and the uniform distribution of materials
achieved from mechanisation in narrow working areas.
Private Driveways and High Amenity Areas
By combining a high performance polymer modified bitumen emulsion
with the natural beauty of decorative stone chipping, we can offer
a high performance and naturally beautiful finish to enhance any
setting or design.
Specialist Surface Dressing Contracts
Councils and main contractors sometimes struggle to successfully
complete inaccessible, narrow and / or remote areas of surface dressing
within their annual programme of works. These areas can have a detrimental
affect on completion times and tie up the main surfacing gangs unnecessarily.
We can quickly and effectively carry out this work using a combination
of our smaller surface dressing tankers and our combined footway
and carriageway sprayers.
