During the late 1990’s we were approached by Liverpool Development Authority to provide a flexible surfacing technique for use over the recently backfilled Albert Dock development.

Due to high chances of ground movement and the expected large volumes of traffic, we suggested the use of a bitumen surface stabilisation system.

This involves the application of hot bitumen emulsions which are harrowed and rolled into the prepared type 1 sub base stone beneath. Two layers of standard surface dressing is applied to provide the final surface finish.

We have successfully used this technique on large HGV parking and turning areas, large hospital car parks, and within carriageway constructions over areas of poor ground conditions.

The success of the system is due to the flexibility of the polymer modified bitumen within the construction. This allows the surface to flex and stretch with ground movement and under heavy vehicle loadings.

This system is generally only suitable for areas exceeding 1000 sq.m.
