Resin bound macadam is an attractive and flexible alternative to the more traditional bitumen bonded surface dressing - a decorative and more sympathetic addition to the environment when used for prestigious driveways, parkland pathways and the urban environment.

Areas of parkland, approach roads and car parks to business enterprises and private driveways are sometimes let down with perished bitumen coverings. Even the black vastness of more recent applications can prove to be rather ugly.

With the resilient and aesthetically pleasing qualities of resin bound Macadam, you can go down a more environmental path with a pallet of possibilities that are more than just skin deep.

Benefits of Resin Bound Macadam

  • Natural stone aggregate
  • Sizes vary from 1-3mm up to 10mm
  • Large colour range
  • Strong and resilient
  • Varying grades are available to suit usage
  • Smooth yet rustic finish
  • A combination with traditional surface dressing are possible with the same contract Walsall Town Centre

The preparation and application of laying resin bound Macadam is simple. The natural stone aggregate is combined with a clear resin and laid to a depth of 20mm - 40mm depending on the aggregate size. Then, it’s mechanically rolled, and where required, topped with a sprinkling of sand to the surface to provide a skid resistant finish - beautifully simple.

Tree Pit Application

Resin bound Macadam is also perfect for tree pit applications. By combining a polyurethane resin with a natural stone aggregate in the correct ratio, it’s possible to provide a permeable depth of decorative surfacing which allows water to the roots, prevents salt build-up which can kill the tree and is flexible enough to allow expansion of the tree’s trunk.

And because the resin bound Macadam is flush when complete litter can’t collect around the base of the tree. Furthermore, tripping hazards that are usually associated with metal tree grill or raised pavers become a thing of
the past.

To prepare for laying resin bound Macadam in a tree pit application, the existing tree pit grill is removed and top soil is excavated to a depth of 120mm. Geo-membrane is then laid along with angular chippings to 60mm to provide the drainage course. Resin bound gravel is then laid to a level of 60mm and compacted by hand or light roller, reducing in depth at the tree base to allow for growth. The process is finished off with a light sprinkle of sharp sand to the surface to provide skid resistance.

Benefits of tree pit application

  • Allows water to pass through to tree roots
  • Prevents build-up of litter and salt around tree base
  • Removes tripping hazard
  • Decorative finish complements urban environmental improvement schemes
  • Allows for the expansion of the tree’s trunk
  • Low-cost reinstatement or replacement compared with tree grills
  • Reduces weed growth
